BLOG: The Great Central Model Event

The dust is just settling on a brilliant weekend of railway activity at the Great Central Railway in Leicestershire which hosted its annual Model Event over the weekend of June 16-18. Hornby Magazine was there for fourth year running, having supported the show from the start, and amongst many great moments it has to rate as the hottest show we have ever attended. The weather was stunning!

The three day event saw 70 layouts – including our own Grosvenor Square – come together at the railway’s Quorn station while further displays were hosted at Rothley and Loughborough too. The preserved double track main line was busy with an intensive timetable which saw nine locomotives in traffic during the weekend. These were Ivatt ‘2MT’ 2-6-0 46521, Stanier ‘8F’ 2-8-0 48624 and BR ‘2MT’ 2-6-0 78018 from the steam fleet working alongside Class 20 D8098, Class 25 D5185, Class 31 D5830, Class 33 D6535 and Class 37/7 37714 during the weekend. Plus you could also experience travel on the line from its three-car Class 101 DMU.

Carrying the Hornby Magazine headboard, Ivatt ‘2MT’ 2-6-0 46521 prepares to depart Quorn on June 18 2017.

Class 37/7 37714 arrives at Quorn from Leicester North working top and tail with Class 33/1 D6535 on June 18 2017.

The GCR’s Class 101 was hard at work throughout the weekend. Here it departs Quorn on June 17 2017.

The Hornby Magazine team were delighted to be a part of the show and enjoyed the opportunity to operate Grosvenor Square for the second time – and we appreciated all the great feedback from the readers and the conversations long and short that we had during the event with visitors.

The layout played host to a few special guests during the weekend including a pair of Southern Region interlopers. Attracting the most attention was a DCC sound fitted running sample of Kernow Model Rail Centre’s Bulleid diesel 10203 which the retailer kindly loaned to us for operation on the Saturday and Sunday. It was a great pleasure to operate the locomotive and you can see it departing Grosvenor Square in this short video…

Also visiting briefly was the first engineering sample of Dapol’s LSWR Adams ‘B4’ 0-4-0T – a delightful little model which we were really pleased to see progress with.

Dapol showcased the first full engineering prototype for its ‘OO’ gauge model of the Adams ‘B4’ 0-4-0T at the GCR Model Event.

However, that’s not all as another special guest made an appearance prior to the show on the Sunday morning, but you will have to wait until our August issue goes on sale to find out more about that.

I’d also like to take the opportunity to thank the organisers of the Great Central Railway Model Event for hosting us once again – we are already looking forward to returning in 2018. Just as importantly I’d like to thank the operating team for Grosvenor Square of Mark, David, Ashley, Ben and our youngest helper Harry for all their support to the layout during the weekend. See you at the next show!

I hope you enjoy this latest post and if you have anything you would like to comment on, drop us a line to Plus if you have pictures or video of Grosvenor Square at the GCR we’d love to see it too – e-mail us at the usual address.
